Short answer: The GTT Lynx (about $525 street) and the Nortel Red Max (about $712 street) are both legitimate first upgrades from a starter torch, but they solve different problems. The Lynx is a 7-jet, single-stage Triple Mix torch: a small, hot, surgical flame that sips oxygen (around 9.5 LPM at its maximum usable flame per GTT’s flow table) and runs happily on an oxygen concentrator and household natural gas. The Red Max is a 45-port, two-stage surface-mix torch with an interchangeable top fire, built to put a lot of heat into a lot of glass quickly, and it draws meaningfully more oxygen when that wide lower fire is open. Pick the Lynx for detail, small boro, and concentrator studios; pick the Red Max for larger, faster heating and soft-glass volume work. This is a choice between work profiles, not a quality ranking.

What the Lynx is: GTT’s first Triple Mix torch

The Lynx is the model where Glass Torch Technologies’ Triple Mix design begins. The Bobcat and Cricket below it in the line are standard surface-mix torches; the Lynx is the first GTT torch to add the third gas path that gives the technology its name. In a Triple Mix torch, oxygen surrounds the fuel at the torch face as in any surface-mix burner, but a second oxygen stream is also injected directly down the fuel stream. The two oxygen supplies are controlled independently by separate valves (green and blue on the torch body), so you can shift the flame’s chemistry and character without changing tips or torches. GTT calls the result “the most efficient flame available”; that is the company’s own framing, but the low measured gas consumption behind it is real enough (more below). At the bench, the Lynx is a small torch with an outsized reputation. GTT describes a hot, penetrating flame capable of working borosilicate up to 2 inch solid rod, while staying soft and clean enough for delicate soft-glass colors, and a small pinpoint flame for fine detail. Those are manufacturer claims, but the community record largely backs the character description: the Lynx is the torch people reach for when they want maximum control per unit of oxygen. It ships with a base, hose adapters, instructions, and a cleaning kit.

What the Red Max is: Nortel’s two-stage workhorse

Nortel Manufacturing has been building torches in Toronto since 1967, and the Red Max sits near the top of its bench-burner range. The lower head carries 45 ports: a center port, a ring of 16, and an outer ring of 27, producing a flame Nortel specs at up to about 1.25 inches wide. Above that sits a second stage: a top burner that is effectively its own torch, available as a Minor, a Mega Minor, or a Premix head taking N11 (11-hole) and N3 tips. The burner itself is all surface mix; premix only enters the picture if you choose the optional Premix top head, which is why our catalog classifies the Red Max (and the rest of Nortel’s bench line) as surface mix.

The practical upshot: you do small and medium work on the top fire, then open the big lower head when you need to move serious heat into serious mass. The Red Max runs on propane and oxygen or natural gas and oxygen, on 3/8 inch or 5/16 inch hose.

Oxygen appetite: a published number versus an unpublished one

Here the comparison gets asymmetric, and it is worth being honest about why.

For the Lynx, GTT publishes flow figures: roughly 3 CFH of fuel and 20 CFH of oxygen at the maximum usable flame, with oxygen supplied at 10 to 15 psi. That oxygen figure converts to about 9.5 LPM, which is the number our catalog carries. It is a full-flame ceiling, not a working average; most sessions run well below it.

For the Red Max, Nortel does not publish an oxygen consumption figure on a comparable basis, and we will not invent one. What we can say qualitatively, from the torch’s architecture and from community experience, is that a 45-port head with the outer fire open draws meaningfully more oxygen than a 7-jet Lynx.

Editor’s note: Treat every figure in this section as either a manufacturer ceiling (Lynx) or unquantified (Red Max). Nortel publishes no LPM number for the Red Max, so any specific figure you see quoted elsewhere is someone’s estimate, not a spec. Community reports below are individual experiences, not measurements.

The concentrator question makes the difference concrete. Lampwork Etc. threads consistently describe the Lynx as an easy concentrator torch: one user cites roughly 7 LPM of oxygen for their maximum usable flame and says a 15 LPM class machine covers it with room to spare; another runs a Lynx-based center fire at about 90 percent on a single 10 LPM concentrator. For the Red Max, the archived “Red Max on concentrator” discussion tells a different story: one user feeds theirs around 20 LPM at 9.5 to 10 psi from multiple stacked concentrators to run top and bottom fires at what they judge to be about 90 percent of tank performance, while another on a single 8 LPM machine got a weak flame that visibly “breathes” with the concentrator’s cycle. Community numbers, not Nortel specs, but the direction is clear: the Lynx is a one-concentrator torch, and a fully open Red Max is not.

Fuel and pressure: both flexible, GTT unusually so

Both torches run propane or natural gas with oxygen, so neither locks you into a fuel. The difference is at the low end of the pressure range. GTT’s torches operate on fuel pressure as low as 1/4 psi, which matters because utility natural gas typically arrives at your meter below 1 psi (G-TEC, which builds natural gas boosters, documents this). In practice that means a Lynx can run on unboosted household natural gas straight from the line. Nortel torches also run natural gas, but Nortel does not make an equivalent low-pressure claim for the Red Max, so plan your gas supply against Nortel’s own documentation rather than assuming house pressure is enough. As always, the manufacturer’s manual for your specific torch takes precedence over anything in this guide when you set regulators and pressures.

Precision versus breadth at the bench

Strip away the spec sheets and the two torches embody opposite philosophies.

The Lynx concentrates its engineering into a small number of jets and a second oxygen path. The payoff is control: a tight, hot, pinpoint flame whose chemistry you can tune valve by valve, on very little gas. Detail work, beads, small sculptural boro, and precise reheats of one zone of a larger piece are its home territory. Its limit is raw coverage; seven jets can only bathe so much glass at once, however hot the flame runs.

The Red Max spends its money on breadth. Forty-five ports and a flame footprint over an inch wide mean large gathers, big tubing, and heavy soft-glass pieces come up to temperature fast, and the separate top fire keeps small work practical on the same torch. The trade-off is per-jet refinement: the outer fire is a broad instrument, not a scalpel, and feeding it costs proportionally more oxygen and fuel.

Neither philosophy is better in the abstract. A production beadmaker and a goblet maker will rank these torches in opposite orders, and both will be right.

Which one fits your work

Choose the Lynx if most of these describe you: your work is detail-heavy or small to mid-scale boro; you run (or plan to run) an oxygen concentrator; your studio has household natural gas and no booster; you value flame-chemistry control over sheer coverage; you want the lower operating cost of a torch that sips gas.

Choose the Red Max if these fit better: you work soft glass at volume or make physically larger pieces; you want one bench setup that spans small top-fire work and big lower-head heating; you have, or are willing to build, an oxygen supply beyond a single small concentrator; you are already comfortable on a Minor and want that flame plus a much bigger one under it.

Two adjacent options worth knowing before you commit.
