What “versatile” actually means in a torch

Versatility is not one number. A torch earns the “all-around” label by being good enough across four axes at once:

  • Both glass families. It should melt soft glass (soda-lime, around 104 COE) cleanly for beads and detail, and still put enough heat into borosilicate for pendants, small sculpture, and modest solid work.   • A wide flame range. The single most useful trait is reach: a pinpoint flame for fine stringer and detail at one end, a broad bushy flame for ambient heat and larger gathers at the other. A torch stuck in the middle forces you to fight it at both extremes.
  • A reasonable oxygen budget. Every extra jet wants more oxygen. A versatile bench torch that runs on roughly 7 to 13 LPM can be fed by one or two concentrators; a hungry torch pushes you toward tanked oxygen. Oxygen is an estimate here, not a hard spec, but the appetite still shapes what you can realistically run.
  • Flame chemistry. Some colors want a reducing flame, others an oxidizing one. A torch that lets you shift the flame without swapping tips is more versatile in practice, not just on paper.

The mid-range all-rounders

GTT Lynx, the compact Triple Mix all-rounder

The GTT Lynx is a 7-jet surface-mix bench torch and GTT’s first Triple Mix design. Triple Mix surrounds the fuel with oxygen and then injects oxygen directly down the fuel stream, so two independently controllable oxygen streams (the green and blue valves) give a wider flame range and adjustable flame chemistry without changing tips. GTT frames the flame as hot and penetrating for boro up to about 2 inches solid, yet soft and clean enough for delicate soft glass, with a pinpoint flame for fine detail. In the catalog it sits at roughly 9.5 LPM oxygen (estimate) and a mid price band near $525. It is the natural first step for someone who wants one torch to genuinely cover both glasses.

GTT Cheetah, the bigger-flame sibling

The GTT Cheetah is the Lynx’s larger relative: a 13-port Triple Mix torch built as a 3-port center fire inside a 10-port outer ring. GTT describes a flame that ranges from a pencil-size point up to a roughly 3/4 inch wide, 20 inch long flame, hot and penetrating for boro up to about 2.5 inches solid and still soft and clean for delicate soft-glass colors. That extra reach costs oxygen: the catalog lists about 13 LPM (estimate), with a mid price band near $645. Choose the Cheetah over the Lynx when you expect to push into bigger boro but still want the soft-glass manners.

Nortel Red Max, the rugged surface-mix bench

The Nortel Red Max is a stainless-steel surface-mix bench burner that Nortel labels a 45-port round burner, configured as a center ring of 16 ports surrounded by a ring of 27. Those add to 43, so we report 45 as Nortel’s own label and note the discrepancy rather than invent a center port. Nortel frames it as rugged and versatile: the large concentrated flame is well suited to borosilicate, and a separately controlled top fire (a Minor, Mega Minor, or premix head) can be added so you can work soft glass or boro from one setup. Flame width runs up to about 1.25 inches. It is a two-stage design in a mid price band near $712. We do not publish an oxygen estimate for it; the figure is not sourced, so treat its appetite as substantial and size your supply to the configuration you buy.

Bethlehem Bravo, the dual-purpose production-leaning bench

The Bethlehem Bravo is a two-stage surface-mix bench burner that replaced the Barracuda. All Bethlehem burners are surface mix, keeping gas and oxygen separate until they leave the face. Bethlehem calls it dual-purpose for both soft and borosilicate glass, and its selling point for versatility is simple: you regulate flame size by turning the gas or oxygen valves rather than changing tips. The catalog records 18 jets (a 6-jet center fire plus a 12-jet outer fire on a 1 inch face), about 30 LPM tanked oxygen at full flame (estimate), and a high price band near $1,171. It asks for the most oxygen of this group, which is the main thing to weigh against its range.

The entry all-rounders on a smaller budget

You do not need to spend mid-band money to get a versatile flame. Two entry torches punch above their price.

GTT Bobcat, the versatile starter

The GTT Bobcat is a 7-jet standard surface-mix torch (not Triple Mix, so it lacks the Lynx’s second oxygen valve and its extra flame-chemistry range). GTT describes a flame from a fine pinpoint up to a roughly 9/16 inch diameter, 13 inch long flame that handles 1.5 inch solid boro and works boro pendants up to about 3 inches. Its real trick for versatility on a budget is oxygen frugality: GTT says it does extremely well on 10 LPM concentrators as well as tanked oxygen, and the catalog lists about 8.5 LPM (estimate) with a min around 5 LPM. At an entry price band near $275, it is the cheapest genuine soft-and-boro all-rounder here.

Carlisle Mini CC, the wide-range surface burner

The Carlisle Mini CC is a totally surface-mixed burner that Carlisle positions for beginners and experts alike, with a brass body, cooling fins, and a stainless tube matrix. Carlisle cites consumption around 1.5 LPM propane and 7 LPM oxygen, and the catalog carries 7 jets, about 7 LPM oxygen (estimate), and an entry price band near $330. It is available as a bench burner or hand torch and is suited to both soft glass and boro, which is exactly the wide-range, low-oxygen profile that makes a torch a good all-rounder.

The honest trade-off: range is not maximum heat

Versatile does not mean most powerful. A torch designed to do a bit of everything spreads its capability across a wide flame range, and that range comes at the expense of top-end boro heat. There is a second trade specific to GTT’s Triple Mix torches. The two-valve system that gives the Lynx and Cheetah their range also carries a learning curve. Community discussion (Lampwork Etc. archive, community knowledge rather than measured fact) frames the Lynx and Bobcat as essentially the same torch until you open the Lynx’s second oxygen valve, and notes that Triple Mix rewards practice: more versatile once mastered, a little more to learn at the start. Some users also find the Lynx not bushy enough for the largest soft-glass work, and put the Bobcat’s practical boro ceiling on tanked oxygen around a 1 inch gather. Useful signal, not spec.

How oxygen supply shapes the choice

Oxygen often decides the torch. The GTT and Carlisle bench torches here sit in a friendly 7 to 13 LPM window, which one or two concentrators can feed; the Bobcat in particular is known to run well on a single concentrator. That keeps the whole system affordable and refill-free. The Bethlehem Bravo is the outlier, asking for about 30 LPM at full flame, which is tanked-oxygen or multi-concentrator territory.
