Short answer: The Nortel Major and the Nortel Red Max are the internal step within Nortel’s bench line: both are surface-mix, two-stage bench burners with a big primary bottom head and a separately controlled top fire, but the Red Max redesigns the large flame around a round burner face and adds a choice of top fires, which is why it sits roughly $220 above the Major in the catalog. If you want the most capable large flame Nortel builds short of custom work, and especially if borosilicate is your main material, the Red Max is the step up. If you want a proven large-and-detail combination at a lower price, the Major still does the job.

The shared design: surface mix plus a modular top fire

Both torches are built on the same idea, which is worth understanding before the differences matter. Each is a two-stage bench burner: a large primary burner at the bottom, plus a separately mounted, independently valved secondary burner on top. You control the two flames on their own sets of valves, so you can run a broad soft flame from the bottom head for volume and heat while keeping a small, precise flame from the top for detail, all on one torch.

Both are also surface mix. In a surface-mix burner, fuel and oxygen stay separate until they reach or just pass the burner face, fuel arriving through a bundle of tubes and oxygen through the gaps between them. That geometry lets a well-adjusted neutral flame keep soft-glass colors true and run a softer flame than a premix design, which is a large part of why so much of the Nortel bench line works this way. The top-fire design is what makes these torches feel modular. On the Major, the top mount is a Minor, giving small and detailed flames up to about 3/4 inch alongside the big bottom flame. Port counts, and the Red Max 45 vs 43 question

The Red Max is where a manufacturer discrepancy lives. Nortel labels the Red Max lower head a 45-port burner, but the same product page describes that head as a round face configured as a center ring of 16 ports surrounded by an outer ring of 27 ports. Sixteen plus twenty-seven is 43, not 45. We report both: the 45-port label is Nortel’s own headline figure, and the described rings total 43. We do not invent a center port or any other detail to make the two reconcile, and neither should you when comparing spec sheets. Flame character and what each does best

The Red Max is, in practical terms, a redesign of that same large-plus-detail idea around a round burner face. Community discussion on Lampwork Etc. gives the Red Max a better reputation for boro than the Major and Minor combination, describing it as a redesigned Major with a stronger large fire and a more forceful, focused flame from the round face. That is community knowledge, framed as reputation rather than a measured figure, and it lines up with the Red Max’s placement one step above the Major in the line. Source: Lampwork Etc..

The flip side, also from community reputation and not from Nortel, is that the Major’s square face produces a less focused flame than the Red Max’s round one. That is a documented trade-off of the design, not a knock on the torch: the Major is a capable, long-serving bench burner, and plenty of boro and soft-glass work has been done on one. If your priority is the strongest, most focused large flame in Nortel’s standard bench line, that is the specific area where the Red Max pulls ahead. Both torches run natural gas and oxygen or propane and oxygen. Nortel publishes suggested pressures for the Major (propane 2 to 6 psi, natural gas 1/4 to 2 psi, oxygen 5 to 8 psi) but does not publish a comparable pressure block for the Red Max on its current page; the Red Max page does specify 3/8 inch or 5/16 inch hoses. For any figure your safety depends on, the manufacturer’s manual and current product page take precedence over anything here, and neither torch has a published oxygen flow rate, so do not treat an LPM number from any third party as gospel. Price, the internal step, and upgrade paths

In the catalog, the Major sits at about $492 and the Red Max at about $712, an internal step up of roughly $220 within the Nortel bench line. Both figures are reference numbers rather than confirmed manufacturer list prices, and neither includes your oxygen supply, which is a real and recurring cost on either torch. Confirm current pricing with Nortel before buying.

The two are close enough in design that the community treats them as adjacent steps in one modular family rather than separate torches. Which one to pick

Choose the Nortel Major if you want a proven large-and-detail bench burner at the lower price, you are working soft glass and general boro, and the square-face bottom flame paired with a top Minor covers what you make. It is the more affordable entry into Nortel’s two-stage bench design, and it has a long track record.

Choose the Nortel Red Max if borosilicate is your main material or you want the strongest, most focused large flame in Nortel’s standard bench line, if you value being able to configure the top fire as a Minor, Mega Minor, or premix head, and if the roughly $220 step fits your budget. It is the more capable and more configurable of the two, and it is the natural upgrade from the Major within the same family.
