Nortel Rocket vs Red Max: Which Production Bench Burner

Short answer: These are two surface-mix bench burners from Nortel, and despite how the comparison is often framed, the Rocket is the larger, step-up torch, not the Red Max. The Rocket opens to a flame about 2 inches wide, adds a separately controlled center-fire section and precision needle valves, and lists at about $1,083. The Red Max is the smaller, less expensive burner: a round-face flame to about 1.25 inches at roughly $712. If you work large boro or run production and want fine, independent control of a hot center, the Rocket earns its price. If you want a versatile mid-range bench torch for boro and soft glass at a lower cost, the Red Max is the sensible pick. Both are hungrier than a beginner burner, so plan the oxygen supply first.

How each burner is built

Both torches are Surface mix Bench burners, which means the fuel and oxygen stay separate until they leave the face. That gives the quieter, more forgiving flame surface mix is known for, and it is the family most of Nortel’s bench line belongs to. The Rocket, which Nortel also sells under the trade name Red Rocket, is a two-stage burner built around a separately controlled center section. That center-fire jet has its own valve, so you can dial a hot, concentrated core independently of the surrounding flame. Nortel does not publish a port count for the Rocket, so we do not state one; the catalog leaves its jet count blank rather than invent a figure.

The Red Max is a round-face, two-stage burner that Nortel labels a 45-port burner. Worth flagging honestly: the same Nortel product page describes the lower head as rings of 16 and 27 ports, which add up to 43, not 45. We report 45 as Nortel’s own headline label and note the discrepancy rather than reconciling it by inventing a center port. The two figures come from the maker; where they disagree, we say so.

Editor’s note: Nortel’s published label of 45 ports for the Red Max does not match its own ring description of 16 + 27 = 43. Treat the port count as approximate and confirm the current configuration with Nortel before buying.

Flame range and control

This is where the two diverge most, and where the Rocket’s higher price actually lands.

The Rocket pairs its independent center fire with precision needle valves and a geared tilt control for placing the flame exactly. The flame ranges from small up to about 2 inches wide. The needle valves matter for the same reason the separate center does: on large or thick boro you often want a soft outer flame for heat control and a sharp, hot point for detail, and the Rocket lets you set each without compromising the other. Nortel offers a foot pedal and a top-mounted premix accessory burner as options. That accessory is a quiet N11 multi-orifice tip producing a flame to about 3/4 inch and accepting National-style tips.

The Red Max reaches about 1.25 inches of flame width and takes an optional top-mounted burner: a Minor, a Mega Minor, or a premix top that accepts N11 (11-hole) and N3 tips. So both torches can carry a second, smaller burner for pinpoint work. One caution that applies to Nortel’s large torches generally: the small top or center burner and the main flame are not fired at the same time, because the two sit too close together. Community accounts describe the small burner as an either/or option for a fine flame alongside the big one, not a simultaneous dual flame. Treat it as a quick switch between a broad flame and a pinpoint, not two live flames at once.

Where each one fits

The Rocket is aimed at large boro and production. The 2-inch flame gives you the envelope for bigger work, and the independent center plus needle valves give you the control to shape it. The Red Max is the versatile mid-range option: a capable boro and soft-glass bench burner at a lower price, with the top-burner option available when you want a second flame. It steps below the Rocket in flame width and cost, not above it. Oxygen supply

Neither torch has a published oxygen flow figure. Nortel does not list an LPM number for the Rocket or the Red Max, and both oxygen fields in our catalog are blank. Any oxygen number you see for these is an estimate, not a spec, and we do not publish one. A community forum once floated a flow figure for the Red Rocket; that is an unverified community number, not a Nortel specification, so we leave it out.

What we can say is directional. A larger torch face has more area for oxygen and fuel to exit, so it needs more flow to reach the same flame velocity. The Rocket’s bigger face and 2-inch flame will therefore draw more oxygen than the Red Max at comparable settings. Larger production burners commonly outrun a single 10 LPM oxygen concentrator, which is why boro production setups often use multiple concentrators or bottled or bulk oxygen. That is a supply-planning point, not a knock on either torch: buy the oxygen the flame you actually run will need. Both burners run on Natural Gas and Oxygen or Propane and Oxygen, with oxygen from bottles or a concentrator per Nortel’s general torch notes. As always, the manufacturer’s manual and current product page take precedence over anything here for pressures, fittings, and setup; confirm the spec with Nortel before you plumb anything.

Price and configuration

The Rocket lists at about $1,083 for the base burner, in our mid price band. The separate center fire, needle valves, and geared tilt are part of the burner; the foot pedal and N11 premix accessory top are extras that add to that figure. The Rocket uses 3/8 inch hose.

The Red Max lists at about $712 for the base burner, also mid band, with the top burner (Minor, Mega Minor, or premix top) as an add-on. So the practical gap between them is wider than the base prices suggest once you option a Rocket up, and narrower than it looks if you add a top burner to a Red Max. Prices move with time and configuration; confirm the current figure with Nortel before buying.

How to decide

A few buyer questions actually separate these two:

  • Do you need a hot center you can control on its own? If yes, the Rocket’s separately controlled center fire and needle valves are the reason to pay more. The Red Max does not offer an independent center; its second-flame answer is an optional top burner.
  • How wide does your flame need to be? The Rocket reaches about 2 inches; the Red Max about 1.25. Large boro and production lean Rocket; mid-range boro and soft glass are comfortable on the Red Max.
  • What oxygen can you feed? The bigger the flame you run, the more oxygen it wants, and a single concentrator can fall short on a large production flame. Size the supply to the torch, not the other way around.
  • Do you want a pinpoint flame too? Both can carry a small second burner, but remember it is an either/or with the main flame, not a simultaneous pair.

If budget is the deciding factor and your work fits a 1.25-inch flame, the Red Max is the value pick. If you are working larger and want independent control of a hot core, the Rocket is the step up, and the price reflects it.
