Short answer: The Nortel Mega Minor and the GTT Bobcat are near twins on paper: both are entry-price, single-stage, 7-jet surface-mix bench torches aimed at the same beginner-to-intermediate work, and both handle soft glass and small boro on a modest oxygen supply. The choice rarely comes down to raw capability. It comes down to your oxygen supply, the flame character you prefer, and which maker’s ecosystem you want to grow into. For a first bench where you might be feeding a single concentrator, the Bobcat has the edge because GTT publishes exactly how it behaves across concentrator sizes. If you already lean toward Nortel or want the model that doubles as a Red Max top fire down the line, the Mega Minor is the equal pick.

Read that table and the two torches look interchangeable, which is honest: they are genuinely in the same class. The differences that matter show up once you look at how each behaves on real gas and oxygen, and where each one sits in its maker’s lineup.
What each torch is
The Mega Minor is Nortel’s upgraded take on the classic Minor bench burner. Nortel builds it on the same 7-port stainless design but with slightly larger ports, which the company says makes “more efficient use of oxygen, making for a hotter flame with the same resources” than the standard Minor. In practice that means a wider, hotter flame that lets you work soft glass faster and larger, step into boro on two concentrators, and still turn down to a needle point for detail and stringer work. It is the Minor’s near-indestructible reputation with a bit more headroom, and Nortel also uses it as the top fire on the larger Red Max.
The Bobcat is GTT’s standard surface-mix starter. It is important to be precise here: the Bobcat is standard surface mix, not GTT’s patented Triple Mix. Triple Mix begins higher up the GTT line with the Lynx and runs upward from there. The Bobcat carries no Triple Mix element; it is standard surface mix through and through. What the Bobcat offers instead is a well-documented, forgiving surface-mix flame with a lot of published detail behind it, plus a stainless base with four mounting holes that GTT notes can double as a forming and shaping surface. It ships with male B fittings, in-line filter screens, instructions, and a cleaning kit.
Both are single burners you bolt to the bench, and both are squarely aimed at beadmakers and people doing small-to-medium boro who want one torch that covers a lot of ground without a big oxygen bill.
Oxygen and pressure
This is where the two pull apart, and it is mostly a documentation difference rather than a capability one.
GTT publishes a clear concentrator ladder for the Bobcat. Per GTT, the Bobcat runs well on a 5 LPM, 5 psi concentrator, is optimal on an 8 LPM concentrator, and does extremely well on a 10 LPM concentrator or tanked oxygen. Our catalog records the Bobcat at roughly 8.5 LPM at its largest usable flame (from GTT’s flow table) with a documented 5 LPM floor. GTT also publishes a fuel-pressure range as low as 1/4 psi, which is why the Bobcat works on low household natural-gas pressure as well as bottled propane. If you are buying your first bench and still working out your oxygen, that published range is genuinely useful: you can match the torch to a concentrator you can actually afford and know roughly what you will get.
The Mega Minor does not carry the same published flow numbers. Nortel describes what the torch can do (wider, hotter flame; soft glass faster and larger; boro on two concentrators) rather than a jet-flow LPM figure. Our catalog places its oxygen appetite at about 9 LPM, which is an owner estimate, not a Nortel spec: it sits the Mega Minor just above the Bobcat’s max-flame figure and just below a GTT Lynx, in the same class as both. Treat that as a sizing hint, not a measured number.
Community reports line up with GTT’s own framing. On Lampwork Etc., flameworkers describe the Bobcat running very well on a 5 LPM, 5 psi concentrator, being optimal around 8 LPM, and doing extremely well at 10 LPM, which makes it a strong pick for squeezing the most out of a smaller concentrator. That is community knowledge rather than measured fact, but it agrees with the manufacturer.
For any actual pressure setting, follow the manufacturer’s manual for your specific torch and gas supply. Do not carry a number from one torch or one fuel over to another.
Editor’s note: the oxygen figures here are estimates, not hard specs. The Bobcat’s ~8.5 LPM is derived from GTT’s largest-usable-flame flow table; the Mega Minor’s ~9 LPM is an owner placement in the same class, since Nortel publishes no jet-flow LPM for it. They are close enough that oxygen appetite alone should not decide this. What should decide it is whether the concentrator you can supply comfortably covers the flame you want to run.
Flame character and what you can make
Both torches cover the same ground for a beginner-to-intermediate maker: soft glass beads and detail work, and small-to-medium borosilicate.
The Mega Minor’s flame runs from a needle point up to about 7/8 inch. Nortel calls it good for boro while still great on soft glass, and cites beads, small sculpture, and marbles up to around 3 inches. The larger ports over the standard Minor are what give it the extra heat for stepping into boro without changing torches.
The Bobcat’s published flame range is stated a little differently by GTT: from a roughly 2 inch pinpoint flame for detail up to a 9/16 inch diameter by 13 inch long flame capable of working 1.5 inch solid borosilicate, and it works boro pendants up to about 3 inches. In everyday terms that is the same envelope as the Mega Minor: comfortable on soft glass, capable on small-to-medium boro, and able to pull down small for fine work.
Neither torch is a production boro machine, and neither pretends to be. If your plan is large solid sculpture or heavy pipe work, you will outgrow both and should look at a bigger surface-mix or Triple Mix burner. For the work these are sold for, the flame ranges are close enough that personal preference and what you can try in person matter more than the numbers.
Which is the better first bench, and why
Start from what actually differs, because the specs are so close.
Buy the Bobcat if oxygen supply is your open question. GTT’s published concentrator ladder (good at 5 LPM, optimal at 8, excellent at 10 or on tanks) plus the very low fuel-pressure floor means you can plan the whole gas-and-oxygen side with real manufacturer numbers instead of guesswork. That is the single most useful thing a first-torch buyer can have, and it is the Bobcat’s clearest advantage. The bundled fittings, screens, and cleaning kit are a small bonus for someone assembling a first setup.
Buy the Mega Minor if you are already in or leaning toward the Nortel ecosystem, or you want the model that later serves as a Red Max top fire if you upgrade within the family. The Minor lineage is one of the most proven in soft-glass beadmaking, and the Mega Minor keeps that reputation while adding a little more heat and oxygen efficiency than the standard Minor. If you value that lineage, or you find one used at a good price, it is every bit the Bobcat’s equal for the work.
A few honest trade-offs to keep in mind for both:
- Ecosystem lock is soft, not hard. Either torch can grow with you, but your next torch is easier to buy inside the same brand’s fittings and habits. Pick the maker whose larger torches you might eventually want.
- Availability varies. Used examples of both show up regularly. The Minor family in particular is common on the used market, which can make a Mega Minor cheaper to get into; verify condition and current variants with the maker before buying either one new.
- The numbers are close on purpose. These are two mature, entry-price, 7-jet surface-mix benches. There is no trick spec that makes one twice the torch. Confirm the current price and configuration with GTT or Nortel directly before you commit, and let flame preference and oxygen reality break the tie.
