Price and what you get for it

Price is the clearest difference between the two. Nortel lists the Mega Minor at about $268, and Bethlehem lists the Alpha at $350.00 manufacturer-direct. That roughly $80 gap is real money at the entry level, where most of your budget should go toward oxygen, fuel, and safety gear rather than the torch itself.

What the extra buys you on the Alpha is not “more torch” in any dramatic sense. Both are single, one flame surface-mix bench burners aimed at the same beginner. The Alpha’s edge is breadth: Bethlehem’s operating instructions list it as running natural gas, hydrogen, propane, or butane, where the Mega Minor’s Nortel page describes it on natural gas and oxygen or propane and oxygen. The Alpha uses 6 gas jets. It is a single-stage surface-mix burner, and because the gas and oxygen do not meet until they leave the face, it shares the same calm, low-velocity character. The catalog records the Alpha at about ~10 LPM and the Mega Minor at about ~9 LPM, but those two numbers do not have the same basis, so treat them as loose estimates rather than a precise head-to-head. The Alpha’s figure is Bethlehem’s own published full-flame tanked-oxygen consumption (Bethlehem quotes 10 LPM at 8 to 20 psi), which is what the torch draws wide open, not a minimum it needs. Fuel and oxygen supply: household gas and concentrators

This is where the Alpha carries a small, specific advantage, and it is worth being precise about it rather than blurring the two torches together.

Bethlehem explicitly positions the Alpha for household gas and a concentrator. Bethlehem calls the Alpha ideal to run on household gas at about 1/4 psi and a 7 psi oxygen concentrator, and notes it delivers a higher fuel volume at low pressure (roughly 7 CFH at 2 psi). That is a documented, maker-stated pairing, and it makes the Alpha an easy fit for a home studio that does not want tanked oxygen.

Nortel lists the Mega Minor on natural gas or propane, with oxygen bottled or from a concentrator. In plain terms: the Mega Minor runs fine on a concentrator, and community reports back that up, but Bethlehem publishes a specific concentrator pairing for the Alpha and Nortel does not for the Mega Minor. Do not read that as the Mega Minor being fussier; read it as one maker documenting more than the other.

For either torch, match your regulator to your fuel and never swap fittings between fuels.
