Short answer: The Bethlehem Bravo and the Nortel Red Max are both two-stage surface-mix bench burners that run soft glass and borosilicate, so on flame character they are closer siblings than the badges suggest. The real split is elsewhere. The Bravo is a fixed, self-contained head with a stainless body and a higher published oxygen appetite, at a manufacturer-direct list price that lands it in our high band. The Red Max is cheaper, sits in the mid band, and its distinguishing feature is modularity: you choose its top fire from a Minor, a Mega Minor, or a premix head. If you want one integrated torch and the budget allows, look at the Bravo. If you want a flexible platform you can reconfigure as your work changes, look at the Red Max.

This is a mid-to-high matchup, not two equally priced torches. How each torch builds its flame

Both torches are surface mix, which means fuel and oxygen stay separate until they meet at or just past the burner face, rather than being blended upstream inside the head. That geometry gives a quieter, softer, slower-velocity flame than a premix torch of similar output, which is why surface-mix burners are the common choice for soft glass and detail work while still delivering penetrating heat for boro. Both are also two-stage torches, meaning a smaller center fire and a larger outer fire you can run together or independently. That is what lets a bench torch idle down to a small pinpoint flame for stringer and detail, then open up to a broad bushy flame for gathering and heating larger masses. The mechanics of how each reaches its second stage are where the two designs diverge, and that difference is the heart of this comparison.

Jet count and the Red Max port question

The Bravo’s layout is unambiguous. Bethlehem’s product page describes a 6-jet center fire inside a 12-jet outer fire, 18 jets total, on a roughly 1-inch face. That is what our catalog records.

The Red Max is where you need to read carefully, because the manufacturer’s own page is not internally consistent. Nortel labels the lower head a 45-port burner. The same product page then describes that head as a center ring of 16 ports surrounded by a ring of 27 ports, which totals 43, not 45. We report both the label and the discrepancy rather than picking a side, and we do not invent a center port to reconcile the numbers. When a maker’s own materials disagree, the honest move is to state the range and say they disagree, so treat “45-port” as Nortel’s stated label and the 16-plus-27 description as the same page’s own breakdown.

Editor’s note: the Red Max port count comes straight from Nortel’s product page, which labels the burner 45-port while describing rings that add to 43. This is a documented discrepancy in the source, not a measurement of ours. Confirm the current configuration with Nortel before relying on a specific port count.

Flame size, heat, and what each melts

Both torches handle soft glass and borosilicate, so neither is a soft-glass-only starter or a boro-only specialist. The difference is in reach and top-end flame.

The Red Max bottom fire runs up to about 1-1/4 inch of flame width, and its optional top-mounted burner adds up to about 3/4 inch. That gives it a genuinely wide low fire for gathering, with a separately controlled top fire for finer or hotter work depending on which head you fit.

The Bravo works from its roughly 1-inch face with the 6-jet center and 12-jet outer stages. It is a stainless-steel burner that Bethlehem describes as cooler-running, and it replaced the discontinued Barracuda in the lineup, carrying that heavier-work heritage into a redesigned body. In practice both are capable mid-size to large bench torches. Neither is the limiting factor for typical bead, small-sculpture, or moderate-boro work; your oxygen supply usually is.

Fuel, oxygen, and pressure

Keep each torch’s numbers separate; do not collapse them into one shared claim, because the makers publish different figures for different fuels.

Bethlehem Bravo. The operating instructions list natural gas, hydrogen, propane, and butane as fuels. Bethlehem gives full-flame consumption of about 6 LPM gas and about 30 LPM tanked oxygen at roughly 8 to 20 psi, and states the Bravo can run on oxygen concentrators at 7 psi with no published minimum LPM. The 30 LPM figure is Bethlehem’s full-flame tanked-oxygen consumption at the published pressure, not a minimum and not a typical working figure, so read it as a ceiling estimate.

Nortel Red Max. Nortel’s suggested pressures are propane 0.5 to 5 psi, natural gas 0.5 to 5 psi, and oxygen 5 to 12 psi, using 3/8 inch or 5/16 inch hoses. Our catalog does not carry a published oxygen LPM for the Red Max, so we do not state one; the pressure band is the figure Nortel publishes.

Two things follow from this. First, hydrogen is a Bravo option, not a Red Max one. The Bravo operating instructions list hydrogen; Nortel’s Red Max product page lists only propane and natural gas, so we do not claim hydrogen support for it. On safety hardware, fit the flashback protection your torch and gas supply actually call for, matched to your setup and confirmed against each maker’s manual, rather than any blanket rule. Bethlehem states its surface-mix burners do not require a flashback arrestor at all, subject to local regulation. That is exactly why a one-size-fits-all placement rule does not hold across torches. Modularity: the Red Max’s real advantage

This is the feature that most separates the two torches. The Red Max is a platform. Its separately controlled top fire is user-chosen among a Nortel Minor, a Mega Minor, or a premix head taking N11/N3 tips. You buy the Red Max base and configure the top fire to the kind of work you do, and you can change it later. If your work shifts from softer beadwork toward hotter or finer boro, you re-top the torch instead of replacing it.

The Bravo takes the opposite approach: a fixed, integrated two-stage head. Everything is engineered to work together out of the box, with nothing to select, mismatch, or lose. That is a genuine strength for buyers who want one torch that simply works, and a limitation for buyers who value the ability to reconfigure. Neither approach is better in the abstract; they suit different temperaments and different studios.

Price and where each fits your bench

The Bravo’s manufacturer-direct list price is about $1,171, which puts it in our high price band under current thresholds. The Red Max is about $712, in the mid band. That is a meaningful gap: the Bravo costs roughly half again as much as the Red Max.

What you are paying for on the Bravo is an integrated stainless burner with a higher published oxygen appetite and hydrogen capability, direct from the maker. What you save on the Red Max buys a modular, reconfigurable torch that many studios have run for years. Neither price includes the oxygen supply, and on the Bravo especially, the roughly 30 LPM full-flame figure is a reminder to budget oxygen as part of the real cost, not an afterthought.

Which one should you buy

Buy the Bethlehem Bravo if you want a single integrated torch with nothing to configure, you value the stainless body and cooler-running design, you may want to run hydrogen, and the higher price fits your budget. It is the more turnkey of the two.

Buy the Nortel Red Max if you want a flexible platform you can re-top as your work evolves, you want to spend less up front, and you are comfortable choosing and, later, changing the top fire. It is the more adaptable of the two, at a lower entry cost.

If the decision still feels close, weigh two things that matter more than the badge: your oxygen supply, which sets the real ceiling on either torch, and whether you value integration or flexibility more in your own studio.
