Short answer: These two torches are not really rivals, they are two different rungs on the ladder. The GTT Mirage is a high-band, two-stage Triple Mix production torch (about $1,975, 40 jets) built to drive both soft glass and large borosilicate work. The Nortel Red Max is a mid-band, surface-mix bench burner (about $712) whose reach depends on which optional top-fire head you fit. So the honest question is not “which is better,” it is “how far do you want to jump.” If your work is outgrowing a small bench torch and you want a modular system you can grow into, the Red Max is the shorter, cheaper step. If you already know you are heading toward high-output boro or production, the Mirage is the bigger commitment that stops you shopping again in a year.

Both are bench-mounted surface-mix torches that run propane or natural gas with oxygen, so the mechanics of setting them up are similar. The gap is in scale, power, and how each maker gets you there.

GTT Mirage: what you are buying

The Mirage is a two-stage torch. GTT builds it around a Lynx center fire, the same 7-jet platform the company uses as the center across its larger Triple Mix torches, then wraps it with two outer rings that bring the total to 40 jets. That center-plus-rings construction is what “two-stage” means here: you can run a tight center flame for detail or open the outer stages for a broad, powerful envelope.

GTT calls this a “completely surface mix torch” that uses its patented Triple Mix technology. That naming trips people up, so it is worth being precise: Triple Mix is GTT’s name for its surface-mix design, not a premix category. Oxygen surrounds the fuel and is also injected down the fuel stream, which GTT frames as a hotter, cleaner burn. Our catalog records the Mirage as mix_type: surface for exactly this reason. GTT lists the Mirage with a standard 4-stud manifold, running propane and oxygen. The company markets it for both soft and hard glass, from a soft bushy flame up to a hard driving flame, which is the range you would expect from a 40-jet two-stage torch. The catalog carries the standard bench 4-stud configuration; GTT prices its variable-switch and compressed-air configurations separately, so the ~$1,975 reference is for the base bench build.

Who it suits: someone doing large boro or production work, or a serious hobbyist who wants one torch that will not become the limiting factor as their skill grows. The catalog marks it advanced, and that is fair. It is a lot of torch to learn on.

Nortel Red Max: what you are buying

The Red Max is a surface-mix bench burner with a two-part design. The lower head is what Nortel labels a 45-port round burner, described as a center ring of 16 ports surrounded by a ring of 27 ports. Those rings add to 43, not 45, so the 45 figure is Nortel’s own headline label and the ring math does not reconcile to it. We keep the maker-stated number and flag the discrepancy rather than inventing a center port to make it add up. Treat “45-port” as Nortel’s label, not a verified sum.

What makes the Red Max a system rather than a single torch is the top fire. It accepts a separately controlled top-mount head, and you choose which one: a Nortel Minor, a Mega Minor, or a premix top that takes N11 (11-hole) and N3 tips. The top burner is bought and configured as an option, so the Red Max you end up with depends on how you spec it. That modularity is the whole idea: you add reach where you need it and control the two flames independently.

On flame size, Nortel gives the lower burner as up to about 1.5 inches in diameter, with the top-mount head adding up to about another 3/4 inch. It runs on natural gas and oxygen or propane and oxygen, and Nortel specs 3/8 inch or 5/16 inch hoses. Our catalog records it as mix_type: surface, priced at about $712 in the mid band.

One thing we do not claim: hydrogen. Nortel’s Red Max page carries a blanket line that all Nortel torches run hydrogen, but individual product pages contradict it, and hydrogen is documented on the company’s Twin Fuel Handtorch, not here. So do not plan a Red Max around hydrogen.

Who it suits: someone doing soft glass, general, and inside-out work who wants a capable bench torch with room to grow through the top-fire options without buying an entirely new torch.

Different tiers, honestly

Line the numbers up and the spec race looks lopsided: 45-port label versus 40 jets, similar stage counts, both surface mix. But a straight spec race misreads these two, because they sit in different places in their makers’ lines and solve the problem differently.

The clearest signal is the price gap. At roughly $712 versus $1,975, the Mirage costs nearly three times the Red Max. That is not two products competing for the same buyer, it is a mid-band torch and a high-band torch. Nortel positions the Red Max as a strong general-purpose bench burner; GTT positions the Mirage as a production and large-boro tool.

The jet philosophy differs too. The Mirage integrates its power into one staged assembly: a Lynx center and two fixed outer rings, tuned together as a single Triple Mix system. The Red Max splits its power across a fixed lower head and a swappable, independently controlled top fire. Neither approach is better in the abstract. Integrated staging gives you a coherent, powerful flame designed as one unit. Modular top-fire gives you flexibility and a lower entry cost, with the option to change the character of the second flame later.

So the real comparison is not “40 versus 45.” It is integrated production torch versus modular growth system, at two different price points.

How to choose

A few honest questions sort this quickly.

  • Scale of work. Routinely working large boro or running production hours points to the Mirage. Beads, soft glass, small-to-medium sculpture, and inside-out work are well within the Red Max’s range.
  • Soft versus boro emphasis. Both handle soft glass and boro per the catalog, but the Mirage’s 40-jet two-stage output is aimed at the demanding end of boro. If boro is occasional rather than central, you may be paying for headroom you will not use.
  • Budget headroom. The Mirage costs well over twice the Red Max. If that difference is better spent on oxygen supply, a kiln, or ventilation right now, the Red Max is the sensible rung and leaves budget for the rest of the setup.
  • Modular versus integrated. If you like the idea of tuning a system over time, adding or changing a top fire as your work shifts, the Red Max rewards that. If you want one torch designed as a whole and do not want to think about configuration again, the Mirage is that.

Whichever way you lean, confirm the current fuel pressure and oxygen requirements with the maker before you buy, and size your oxygen supply to the torch. A high-output torch like the Mirage is only as good as the oxygen feeding it. Editor’s note: Two spec points need care. First, the Red Max port count: Nortel labels the lower head a 45-port burner, but the rings it describes (16 plus 27) total 43. We report the maker’s label and the discrepancy rather than picking one. Second, oxygen: the Mirage’s ~26 LPM figure is our estimate derived from GTT’s own flow table at the largest usable flame on propane, while the Red Max has no separately sourced oxygen figure, so the two are not directly comparable and both should be read as rough estimates.
