Nortel vs GTT Torches: How to Choose Between the Two Brands

Nortel vs GTT torches: Nortel wins on value and firepower per dollar, GTT owns the Triple Mix flame ceiling and low-pressure fuel. How to pick between them.

Short answer: For most buyers the choice comes down to two things. Nortel gives you the most proven flame per dollar: a well priced, surface-mix lineup that runs from the classic Nortel Minor starter up to boro burners like the Red Max, and it is the workhorse a huge share of studios already own. GTT costs more but brings the patented Triple Mix flame, which starts at the Lynx and runs up the line, plus the ability to work on very low fuel pressure. Pick Nortel for value and reliability, and GTT for the Triple Mix flame ceiling and fuel flexibility. What the two brands actually share

Before the differences, the common ground, because it is larger than most comparisons admit. Every Nortel and GTT bench torch in our catalog is surface mix: fuel and oxygen stay separate until they meet at or just past the torch face, which gives a calmer, more forgiving flame than a premix burner. Both brands run propane or natural gas with oxygen, from bottled tanks or an oxygen concentrator. Both build durable metal-bodied torches with fine needle valves that a beginner can grow into and a professional can rely on for years. If you put a Nortel Minor next to a GTT Bobcat, you are looking at two 7-jet, single-stage, surface-mix bench torches that do very similar work.

The real divergence is GTT’s Triple Mix. Where a standard surface-mix torch surrounds the fuel with oxygen, Triple Mix also injects oxygen directly down the fuel stream, so the fuel burns more completely for a hotter, cleaner flame. GTT gives you two independently controllable oxygen streams (the green and blue valves) so you can widen the flame range and adjust chemistry without swapping tips. That is the feature you are paying the GTT premium for, and it is worth understanding before you decide it matters to you. One thing to keep straight: Triple Mix is not GTT’s whole line. The entry Bobcat and the Cricket are standard surface mix. Triple Mix begins at the Lynx, GTT’s first Triple Mix torch, and continues upward. So a shopper cross-shopping GTT’s cheapest torch against a Nortel is not actually comparing Triple Mix at all.

Entry bench: Minor, Mega Minor, and the Bobcat

This is where the value case for Nortel is clearest. The Nortel Minor is a surface-mix, 7-port bench torch with a stainless front end and precision needle valves, and Nortel frames it as the affordable studio workhorse that the majority of lampworkers and teaching studios use. At roughly $224 (reference) it is the cheapest bench torch either brand offers and the most common “I learned on this” torch in soft-glass beadmaking.

Step up to the Mega Minor at about $268 (reference) and you get the same 7-port surface-mix design tuned to use oxygen more efficiently for a larger, hotter flame, which works soft glass faster and reaches into small-scale boro sculpture.

GTT’s entry answer is the Bobcat at about $275 (reference), a single-stage surface-mix torch in the same entry band. It costs a little more than the Minor and lands right on the Mega Minor’s price, and it is popular partly for running well on a single modest oxygen concentrator. At this level the decision is genuinely close, so it gets its own head to head in Bobcat vs Minor. The short read: the Minor wins on raw price and used-market availability, while the Bobcat is the pick if you specifically want to stay in the GTT family as you climb.

The mid tier most buyers actually weigh

This is the tier where the brand question gets interesting, because it is where GTT’s Triple Mix first appears and where Nortel’s firepower-per-dollar advantage is largest.

On the GTT side, the Lynx at about $525 (reference) is the entry point to Triple Mix: a 7-jet, single-stage surface-mix bench torch, the first Triple Mix torch GTT built. Above it the Cheetah at roughly $645 (reference) adds ports (a 3-port center fire inside a 10-port outer ring, 13 total) for a bigger flame envelope.

On the Nortel side, the same money buys noticeably more jets. The Major (about $492 reference) is a 64-jet, two-stage surface-mix bench torch. The Red Max (about $712 reference) is a 45-jet, two-stage boro-focused burner. Nortel lists the Red Max producing flames from needle-thin to roughly 1.5 inches, running propane (about 2 to 6 psi) or natural gas (about 0.25 to 2 psi) with oxygen (about 5 to 8 psi). If your priority is the most flame and adjustability for the fewest dollars, Nortel’s mid tier is hard to beat.

So the honest trade in this band is: more jets and lower price from Nortel, versus the Triple Mix flame and its independent oxygen control from GTT. If you work boro and want the cleanest, hottest flame you can tune without changing tips, the Lynx justifies its premium. Editor’s note: Nortel labels the Red Max a 45-jet burner while describing port rings that sum to roughly 42 to 44 (for example 16 plus 27). We report Nortel’s own 45 label and flag the discrepancy rather than invent a center port. Treat published jet counts across both brands as maker figures, and confirm the current spec with the maker before you buy.

Production and the boro flame ceiling

At the top, the brands stop overlapping and start defining different ceilings. GTT’s production and large-boro tier climbs from the Phantom (about $1,425 reference, 22 jets, two stage) to the Mirage (about $1,975 reference, 40 jets, two stage) to the Delta Elite (about $2,575 reference for the standard four-stud bench, 57 jets; a hand-torch version is priced separately). These are Triple Mix torches built to push large borosilicate and sustain production work, and their prices reflect it.

Nortel’s upper bench options sit lower on both jets-for-boro and price. The Rocket is a two-stage, boro-focused surface-mix burner at about $1,083 (reference), and the Red Max remains a capable large-flame option well under a thousand dollars. Nortel can absolutely melt serious boro; what it does not offer is a Triple Mix flame at the very top of the range. If your work depends on the biggest, hottest, most tunable flame available, that ceiling is GTT’s. If it depends on getting most of the way there for meaningfully less money, that is Nortel’s argument.

Fuel and pressure: what your supply can feed

GTT’s second differentiator, alongside Triple Mix, is low fuel pressure. GTT torches are designed to work at fuel pressures far below what many burners need, which is the basis of the “runs on household natural gas” reputation. That reputation comes with a real caveat, though. GTT states the Lynx’s minimum recommended gas pressure at about 2.5 lb, and community reports put satisfying Triple Mix operation around 2 to 2.5 psi of fuel. Standard unregulated household natural gas is roughly 1/4 psi, which is generally too low without a raised or regulated line. So GTT’s fuel flexibility is real, but “plug it into the house gas line” usually still means arranging adequate pressure. Our natural gas conversion guide covers what that involves.

Nortel is equally happy on propane or natural gas with oxygen, and publishes usable pressure ranges per model (the Red Max figures above are an example). Neither brand is locked to one fuel, and both depend far more on your oxygen supply than on the torch itself: a bigger torch of either brand that starves for oxygen underperforms a modest one that is well fed.

Whichever brand you choose, the manufacturer’s manual is the authority on pressures and setup, and it overrides any figure here. Price at a glance

Catalog reference prices for the anchor models most buyers weigh. Figures come from the makers’ own pages where we have them, are of mixed capture dates, and several upper models are “from” starting prices. Confirm the current number with GTT or Nortel before you buy.

The pattern is consistent: at every tier Nortel gives you more jets or a lower price, and GTT charges a premium that buys the Triple Mix flame and its independent oxygen control. Neither is “better” in the abstract; they optimize for different things.

How to choose

  • Tightest budget, soft glass and beads: Nortel Minor. Nothing else matches it on price plus used-market availability, and it is the proven studio starter.
  • A little more, still value-first: Nortel Mega Minor or the GTT Bobcat. Very close call; go Nortel to save, go GTT if you want to build into the Triple Mix family later.
  • Most flame per dollar for boro: Nortel Major or Red Max. More jets and lower price than the GTT mid tier, standard surface-mix flame.
  • You want the Triple Mix flame: start at the GTT Lynx and go up. This is the one thing Nortel does not offer, and it is the whole reason to pay GTT’s premium.
  • Household natural gas is your fuel: GTT’s low-pressure design leans your way, but plan for adequate regulated pressure; do not assume unregulated house gas is enough.
  • Top-end production and the biggest boro flame: GTT Phantom, Mirage, or Delta Elite. Nortel’s Rocket is the value alternative if you do not need that ceiling.
