What the Nortel Red Max is
The Red Max is a two-stage surface-mix bench burner from Nortel. Its defining trait is a modular top fire: the lower head is a fixed round burner, and the buyer chooses the upper head separately, a Minor surface-mix top, a Mega Minor surface-mix top, or a premix head. That top fire is separately controlled, so you run a broad bushy flame from the lower burner and a smaller, more focused flame up top, each on its own valve.
The port count needs a careful note. Nortel labels the lower head a 45-port burner, but the same product page describes it as a center ring of 16 ports surrounded by a ring of 27 ports, which total 43. We report Nortel’s own headline label of 45 and flag the discrepancy rather than invent a center port to reconcile the two figures.
Nortel states the lower burner produces a flame up to roughly 1.25 to 1.5 inch in diameter, with the top mount reaching up to about 3/4 inch. It runs on propane or natural gas with oxygen. In our catalog the Red Max carries a reference price of about $712, placing it in the mid price band.
What the GTT Phantom is
The Phantom is a two-stage, fully surface-mix bench torch from GTT, and GTT describes it as the first of its two-stage Triple Mix torches in the lineup. It combines the Lynx 7-jet center fire with a 15-jet outer ring, for 22 jets total. GTT sells it in 2-stud or 4-stud bench configurations, and also as a Phantom hand torch with a thumb on/off switch for the outer flame. The Lynx center fire is the same single-stage burner GTT sells on its own as the GTT Lynx, so the Phantom is effectively that detail burner wrapped in a second, larger stage.
Triple Mix is GTT’s own framing for the flame range: the company describes flames spanning fuel-rich reduction, neutral, oxygen-rich oxidizing, and over-oxidizing, from a soft bushy flame to a hard driving flame, across both soft and hard glass. The Red Max earns its range through modularity. You pick the top fire, Minor, Mega Minor, or a premix head, so the character of the small flame is a purchasing decision you make once. That is flexible in a hardware sense: two operators can order the same lower burner and end up with different upper flames. The trade-off is that the flame chemistry is what a surface-mix burner gives you, and the top fire is chosen up front rather than dialed in at the bench.
The Phantom earns its range through Triple Mix. GTT’s pitch is that a single torch spans reducing to oxidizing flames and soft-bushy to hard-driving shapes without swapping heads, which is the reason fumers and color workers reach for GTT torches. Again, that breadth is GTT’s own framing; treat it as a claim to verify against your own glass and your own eyes, not as a measured fact. What is not in dispute is that the Phantom’s 22-jet layout, with the Lynx as its center fire, is a genuinely different burner design from the Red Max’s ringed lower head.
Community and school sources note that studios steer learners and intermediates toward surface-mix torches precisely because the flame is wide, adjustable, and backfire-resistant. Nortel publishes operating pressures for the Red Max: propane 0.5 to 5 psi, natural gas 0.5 to 5 psi, and oxygen 5 to 12 psi, running natural-gas-and-oxygen or propane-and-oxygen, with 3/8 inch or 5/16 inch hoses. Both catalog entries list only propane and natural gas as fuels. Nortel’s Red Max page also carries a blanket line that all Nortel torches run hydrogen, but individual Nortel product pages contradict that, so we do not claim hydrogen support for the Red Max.
For the Phantom, GTT’s flow-rate table cites figures around 10 psi fuel and 35 psi oxygen at the largest usable flame, and from that same table we estimate oxygen use at roughly 16.5 LPM. Read that LPM as an estimate, not a spec: it is one point on GTT’s own flow table (propane basis), and oxygen is the juice you feed the torch, not a headline buying number. Nortel does not publish a comparable single LPM figure for the Red Max, so we leave it blank rather than guess.
Whichever torch you choose, the manufacturer’s manual sets the real numbers for your exact configuration and gas supply, and it takes precedence over any figure here. How far do I jump?
The honest framing is that the Phantom is about twice the reference price of the Red Max, so this is a tier jump. Here is how to think about whether it is worth it for you.
- Stay with the Red Max if your budget tops out near the mid band, you want a proven Nortel workhorse, and the modular top fire (Minor, Mega Minor, or premix) covers your small-flame needs. For soft glass, inside-out work, and general boro at a moderate flame, it does the job without the premium.
- Jump to the Phantom if you specifically want GTT’s Triple Mix flame range in one torch, you work color or fuming where reduction-to-oxidation control matters, and the high-band price fits. You are paying for the flame chemistry and the Lynx-based center fire, not for more raw size.
- Consider the middle ground if the price gap is the sticking point. GTT’s own Sidewinder is a two-stage 22-jet torch at a lower reference price than the Phantom, and the larger GTT Mirage sits above the Phantom if you need more power. The larger flame on either torch has a larger oxygen appetite, so budget your oxygen supply to match whichever way you jump. A torch that outruns its oxygen is a frustrating torch at any price.
