Hoses. If hoses come with the torch, inspect them for dry rot, especially near the fittings where the rubber flexes and cracks first. Hoses are inexpensive and easy to replace, so treat any doubt as a reason to swap them rather than a reason to walk away, but never run a hose you are unsure of.

Most used torches need a clean, not a rebuild. The rule that keeps you out of trouble is to use the maker’s own cleaning wire, sized to that torch’s ports. GTT, for example, ships a cleaning wire with the torch and sells face brush and Triple Mix cleaning kits. A wire that is too large can enlarge or damage a port, which is exactly the irreversible harm you inspected for, so matching the wire to the ports is not fussiness.
Where the maker wire is missing, community practice is a non-brittle wire such as guitar string or stainless steel leader wire in roughly the 0.012 to 0.014 inch range, paired with a brass or brass-coated brush that will not scratch the stainless face. Clean the face before lighting and clear the ports periodically rather than waiting for a problem. Treat these gauges as community recommendations, not a maker spec, and default to the maker’s wire when you can get it.
Valves are the other refurbishing story. Bethlehem’s modular valves use precision needles, and replacement valves exist for its Alpha, Bravo, Champion, and Grand torches. Hydrogen support is model and tip specific, and it is one place where a used torch can bite you. The Carlisle CC burner runs oxygen with natural gas, propane, or hydrogen using different tips: the hydrogen tip is unpiloted, and the piloted tips will be damaged if run on hydrogen. So a used CC sold “with hydrogen tip” needs the right unpiloted tip actually present, and a used CC you plan to run on hydrogen needs that tip added, not a piloted one pressed into service.
