Nortel Minor vs Mega Minor: Which Starter Bench Torch to Buy

Short answer: For a first bench torch focused on soft-glass beads and small work, the Nortel Minor is the proven, economical choice at roughly $224. Spend the extra $44 or so on the Nortel Mega Minor (around $268) only if you already know you want to push into small borosilicate or want a little more heat and flame breadth on the same oxygen supply. They are the same basic burner: the Mega Minor has slightly larger ports for a hotter, broader flame, not a different class of torch.

What the two torches share

The Minor and the Mega Minor are far more alike than they are different. Both are:

  • Surface-mix bench-mounted burners with a 7-port stainless front end. Surface mix keeps the fuel and oxygen separate until they meet at the face of the torch, which gives a calmer, more forgiving flame than premix, exactly what you want while your rotation and timing are still developing.   • Fueled by propane or natural gas, both burned with oxygen. Either torch can run from bottled oxygen or an oxygen concentrator.
  • Priced in the entry band: about $224 for the Minor and $268 for the Mega Minor per our catalog reference figures.

Nortel Manufacturing Ltd. has built these burners in Toronto since the company was founded in 1967 by Peter Norton, and the Minor has long been the most popular burner among beadmakers. That track record is a real part of the value here: parts, advice, and used units are all easy to find.

What the Mega Minor actually changes

Nortel describes the Mega Minor as the same burner as the Minor but with slightly larger ports. The result, in the maker’s own framing, is hotter temperatures and more efficient use of oxygen for a hotter flame on the same supply. That is the whole story, and it is worth being precise about it: this is a modest step, not a category jump. There is no second stage, no premix element, and no change in mount or fuel.

The most visible difference is flame range. Nortel lists the Minor flame at 1/8 inch to 3/4 inch, and the Mega Minor from a needle point up to 7/8 inch. So the Mega Minor reaches a slightly larger flame at the top and, per Nortel, a finer point at the bottom. In practice that gives it a little more ceiling for heavier soft-glass work and small boro, while still being able to pull in for detail.

Community discussion (see the Lampwork Etc. thread below) tends to describe the Mega Minor flame as slightly hotter and a bit broader or wider, less tight than the Minor’s, and a little more efficient on an oxygen concentrator. The Minor, in the same conversations, gets praised as a simple, reliable workhorse with an easy-to-read neutral, oxidizing, and reducing flame. Treat that as community knowledge rather than measured fact, but it lines up with Nortel’s own “larger ports, hotter flame” description.

Editor’s note: the oxygen figures above are our own max-usable-flame estimates, not published Nortel specifications. We place both burners at about 9 LPM, just above a GTT Bobcat (~8.5 LPM) and below a GTT Lynx (~9.5 LPM), which is a rough guide for sizing a supply, not a spec sheet. When the Minor is the right call

The Minor is the right first torch for most people who are:

  • Working soft glass, making beads, small sculpture, and marbles up to about 3 inches. This is the work the Minor was built around, and it does it very well.
  • On a budget, or funding the rest of the system. Remember that the torch is rarely the biggest line item in a starter setup; oxygen, a regulator, flashback protection, eyewear filtered for your glass, and ventilation all add up. The cheaper of two near-identical torches leaves more room for the parts you cannot skip.
  • Buying their first torch and want the most-documented, easiest-to-resell option. The Minor is everywhere, which means help and used units are everywhere too.
  • Chasing tight detail. The Minor’s flame is a touch tighter than the Mega Minor’s, which some beadmakers prefer for fine soft-glass work.

When the small step up to the Mega Minor is worth it

The Mega Minor earns its extra cost in a few specific situations:

  • You already expect to work small boro. The Mega Minor is positioned as the better of the two for small-scale borosilicate while staying strong on soft glass. If you know boro is where you are headed, buying the Mega Minor first can save you a trade later.
  • You want a bit more heat for faster soft-glass work or slightly larger pieces, and you would rather have the ceiling than not.
  • You are running an oxygen concentrator and want headroom. Community reports describe the Mega Minor as a little more efficient on a concentrator, which can matter when your oxygen supply is fixed. See our oxygen concentrator LPM guide for how to size that supply.

If none of those apply, the difference is small enough that the Minor is the sensible pick. This is not a case where the more expensive torch is meaningfully “better”; it is a slightly bigger version of the same tool.

Oxygen and gas supply: what either needs to run

Both torches are modest enough that Nortel says a single oxygen concentrator is sufficient for a Minor-class burner, and both are commonly run on one concentrator in home studios. That is a real cost advantage over hungrier torches that demand two concentrators or bulk oxygen. If you prefer bottled oxygen, either torch runs on that too; the choice is about refills, storage, and output, not about the torch. On pressures, follow the manufacturer’s manual for your specific torch and fuel; those figures take precedence over anything here. As a reference point, Nortel’s Mega Minor page lists suggested pressures of propane 2 to 6 psi, natural gas 1/4 to 2 psi, and oxygen 5 to 8 psi. We are not printing a precise Minor pressure range here because the published Minor figures we could confirm were inconsistent; check the manual or ask Nortel directly rather than guessing. Never mix up fittings or regulators between fuels, and set pressures to the maker’s spec.

Growing past both

Neither torch is a dead end. The Mega Minor is often used as the top fire on the Nortel Red Max, and Minor or Mega Minor tops can sit atop larger Nortel bench burners, so the front end you learn on can keep earning its place in a bigger setup. For most people, though, the honest answer is that a Minor or Mega Minor lasts a long time. Plenty of working beadmakers never feel the need to move past one. Buy the smaller torch if budget or tight detail matters most; buy the Mega Minor if you already know boro or a bit more heat is in your near future. Either way you are buying a burner with a decades-long track record behind it.
